HP Printer Support Printer Not Scanning? Here's How to Fix It

If your HP all-in-one printer has stopped scanning, here are the most common causes and fixes.

Common HP scanner problems:

  • Scanner not detected by your computer

  • HP Scan software won't open or crashes

  • Scanned image is blank, dark, or blurry

  • Scanner light not turning on

Fix 1 — Restart everything:

Turn off your HP printer and computer, wait 30 seconds, and turn them back on. This fixes most temporary scanner glitches.

Fix 2 — Check the connection:

  • For USB: try a different USB cable and port

  • For wireless: make sure your printer and computer are on the same WiFi network

Fix 3 — Reinstall HP scan software:

  1. Uninstall the current HP software from Control Panel → Programs

  2. Download the full HP software suite from support.hp.com

  3. Reinstall and restart your computer

Fix 4 — Use Windows Fax and Scan to test:

  1. Open Windows Fax and Scan → New Scan

  2. Select your HP printer from the list

  3. If it scans here, the HP software is the issue — reinstall it

Fix 5 — Clean the scanner glass:

A dirty scanner glass causes blurry or dark scanned images. Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to clean the glass surface.

Fix 6 — Update HP drivers:

Outdated drivers cause scanner failures especially after Windows updates. Download the latest driver from support.hp.com.
