HP Printer Printing Slowly? Here's How to Speed It Up

If your HP printer is taking too long to print, these fixes will get it back up to speed.

Common reasons for slow HP printing:

  • Printer is set to Best or Maximum DPI quality mode

  • Large file size being sent to the printer

  • Printer is low on ink

  • Outdated printer driver

  • Too many print jobs in the queue

Fix 1 — Change print quality setting:

  1. When printing, click Printer Properties or Preferences

  2. Change print quality from Best to Normal or Draft

  3. Draft mode is significantly faster for everyday documents

Fix 2 — Clear the print queue:

  1. Go to Devices and Printers → right-click your HP printer → See what's printing

  2. Cancel all pending jobs

  3. Resend your document

Fix 3 — Update the HP printer driver:

Outdated drivers slow down communication between your computer and printer. Download the latest driver from support.hp.com.

Fix 4 — Print as image (for complex PDFs):

  1. In the print dialog, click Advanced

  2. Check Print as Image

  3. This simplifies the data sent to the printer and can speed up printing of complex documents

Fix 5 — Check ink levels:

Low ink causes HP printers to slow down to conserve the remaining ink. Replace low cartridges.

Fix 6 — Restart the printer:

A simple restart clears the printer's memory and often restores normal print speed.
