HP Printer Spooler Error — How to Fix It on Windows

A print spooler error stops your HP printer from receiving print jobs. Here's how to fix it.

What is the print spooler?

The Windows Print Spooler is a service that manages print jobs sent to your HP printer. When it crashes or gets corrupted, your printer stops working even if everything else is fine.

How to fix HP printer spooler error:

  1. Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter

  2. Scroll down to Print Spooler

  3. Right-click → Stop

  4. Open File Explorer and go to: C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS

  5. Delete all files inside this folder (do not delete the folder itself)

  6. Go back to Services → right-click Print Spooler → Start

  7. Try printing again

If the spooler keeps crashing:

  • Update your HP printer driver — an outdated driver is a common cause of spooler crashes

  • Run the Windows Printer Troubleshooter: Settings → Update & Security → Troubleshoot → Printer

  • Check Windows Event Viewer for specific spooler error codes
