How to Reset Your HP Printer

Resetting your HP printer can fix many common issues — offline errors, connectivity problems, frozen screens, and persistent error codes. Here's how to do it.

Soft reset (basic restart):

  1. Press the power button to turn off the printer

  2. Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer

  3. Wait 60 seconds

  4. Plug the power cord back in and power on

  5. Try printing again

Hard reset (clears network settings):

  1. On your HP printer's control panel, go to Settings → Restore Network Settings

  2. Confirm the reset — this clears your WiFi password and network configuration

  3. Reconnect your printer to WiFi using the Wireless Setup Wizard

Factory reset (restores all original settings):

  1. On the printer panel: Settings → Printer Maintenance → Restore Defaults

  2. Confirm — this erases all custom settings including WiFi, tray settings, and print preferences

  3. Set up the printer again from scratch

When to use each reset:

  • Soft reset: printer frozen, not responding, minor errors

  • Hard reset: WiFi connection issues, printer not found on network

  • Factory reset: persistent error codes, selling or giving away the printer
