HP Printer Paper Jam? Here's How to Clear It

A paper jam is one of the most frustrating HP printer problems — but it's almost always fixable in a few minutes.

Common causes of HP printer paper jams:

  • Wrinkled, torn, or damp paper

  • Overloaded paper tray

  • Paper not aligned properly in the tray

  • Debris inside the printer

How to clear a paper jam on an HP printer:

  1. Turn off your HP printer and unplug it from the power source

  2. Open all access doors — front, rear, and top cover

  3. Gently pull the jammed paper out in the direction of paper travel (never pull backward)

  4. Check all paper paths — including the rear access door and duplexer

  5. Remove any torn pieces of paper

  6. Reload the paper tray with a fresh, aligned stack (don't overfill)

  7. Close all doors, plug the printer back in, and power it on

  8. Print a test page

To prevent future paper jams:

  • Use only HP-recommended paper types and sizes

  • Fan the paper before loading

  • Don't mix paper types in the tray

  • Keep the paper tray filled to the correct level
