HP Printer Not Printing Black Ink? Here's the Fix

If your HP printer is printing everything except black, or producing faded black text, here's how to fix it.

Common reasons HP printer won't print black:

  • Black ink cartridge is empty or low

  • Clogged printhead nozzles

  • Incorrect print settings (color mode selected instead of black)

  • Dried ink in the printhead

How to fix HP printer not printing black ink:

  1. Check ink levels — Open HP software on your computer → check black ink level. Replace if empty or low.

  2. Clean the printhead: Go to HP Printer Assistant software → Printer Maintenance → Clean Printhead. Run the cleaning cycle 2–3 times. Print a test page after each cycle.

  3. Print a diagnostic page: On your printer: Settings → Reports → Print Quality Report. This shows which nozzles are clogged.

  4. Check print settings: When printing, make sure "Print in Grayscale" or "Black & White" is not accidentally selected. Set print mode to "Normal" or "Best".

  5. Align the printhead: HP Printer Assistant → Printer Maintenance → Align Printhead
