HP Printer Ink Cartridge Not Recognized — Fix It Fast
Getting a "cartridge not recognized" or "cartridge missing" error on your HP printer? Here's how to fix it.
Steps to fix HP cartridge not recognized:
Open the cartridge access door and remove the cartridge
Look at the copper-colored contacts on the cartridge — if dirty, gently clean them with a dry lint-free cloth
Also clean the contacts inside the printer where the cartridge sits
Reinsert the cartridge firmly until it clicks
Close the access door and wait for the printer to initialize
If the error continues:
Try a different cartridge if you have one available
Make sure the cartridge is the correct model for your HP printer
Update your HP printer firmware from support.hp.com — sometimes a firmware update fixes cartridge recognition issues
Using third-party cartridges:
HP printers are designed for HP-genuine cartridges. Some off-brand or refilled cartridges trigger the "not recognized" error even when they have ink. Switching to a genuine HP cartridge usually resolves it.
