How to Set Up Fax on Your HP Printer

Many HP all-in-one printers include a built-in fax feature. Here's how to set it up and use it.

What you need:

  • An HP all-in-one printer with fax capability (most HP OfficeJet and some LaserJet models)

  • An active phone line (analog landline)

  • A phone cable (RJ-11)

HP fax setup steps:

  1. Connect one end of the phone cable to the 1-LINE port on the back of your HP printer

  2. Connect the other end to your wall phone jack

  3. On the printer's control panel, go to Setup → Fax Setup → Basic Fax Setup

  4. Enter your fax number

  5. Set the date and time (required for fax headers)

  6. Run a Fax Test — Setup → Tools → Run Fax Test

Sending a fax on HP printer:

  1. Place your document face-down on the scanner glass or face-up in the document feeder

  2. On the control panel, tap Fax

  3. Enter the recipient's fax number

  4. Tap Send

Receiving faxes:

  • Set the Answer Mode to Automatic if you want the printer to receive faxes without you being there

  • Go to Setup → Fax Setup → Answer Mode → Auto

HP fax not working:

  • Make sure the phone line is connected to the 1-LINE port (not 2-EXT)

  • Test the phone line by plugging in a regular phone and checking for a dial tone

  • Run the Fax Test from Setup → Tools
